You can also scent the vinegar with your favorite essential oil, using a drop or two per cup of white vinegar. Use the same amount as you would a store bought softener and add to the regular softener spot in your washer or during the rinse cycle. Mix in vinegar and pour in container of choice. To use vinegar as a homemade fabric softener, simply add about 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle, or use in a Downy Ball. Directions: Mix hot water and conditioner together in medium bowl. But, basically, there is a cap on the ball that floats on top of your laundry during the wash cycle, and then when the spin/rinse cycle starts, that spinning will release that cap and then dispense the fabric softener into the rinse cycle.
